چکیده

Accurate analyses concerning the ecological value of urban railway sites are required to ensure a sustainable development of inner urban open space. One problem in this context is the great heterogeneity of such areas. New opportunities to investigate heterogeneous urban areas arose with the advent of geometric very high resolution (VHR) satellite data. A bundle of panchromatic and multispectral QuickBird data was employed to explore the potential of such sensors for urban ecological monitoring and assessment exemplified for a railway area in the Southeast of Berlin. An object-oriented, hierarchical classification approach was employed to integrate shape and texture parameters into the analysis. Seven land use classes based on three hierarchical object levels were distinguished. A validation based on field mapping and aerial photography revealed an overall accuracy of about 85%. The classification result allows to answer various ecologically determined questions and to describe the site’s inherent ecological value. Imperviousness was calculated based on the material specific degree of sealing and different vegetation succession states were differentiated. Moreover, the separation of vegetation on tracks from other vegetation allowed deriving information about the recent utilization of railway tracks, which is not available otherwise. It is concluded that the geometric resolution of QuickBird VHR data is suited to separate relevant surface components of derelict urban railway sites at a local scale.

Rail Corridors between Minimal Use of Train and Unsystematic Tightening of Population: A Methodological Essay

In the current situation, the automobile has become the main means of locomotion. It allows traveling long distances, encouraging urban sprawl. To counteract this trend, the train is often proposed as an alternative to the car. Simultaneously, the favoring of urban development around public transport nodes such as railway stations is one of the main issues of the coordination between urban plan...

Identifying urban corridors : unified concept and global analysis

Fast-growing spatial expansion and merging of urban areas on a global scale generate new forms such as megacities, mega-regions or urban corridors [e.g. UN-Habitat 2009; Florida et al., 2007]. With populations exceeding tens of millions, extents of hundreds of kilometres and the crossing of water bodies as well as international boundaries, these areas pose new challenges to authorities includin...

A Dynamic Model for Evaluating the Utility of Railway Transit Corridors; a Case study of Bandar Abbas-Sarakhs Corridor

Currently, road transportation is the main mode of freight transit in Iran and about 90% of freight transit is done through this mode of transportation which is not in line with the transportation policies that based on them 70% of the freight transit should be done through road transportation and 30% of the freight transit should be done through rail transportation. However, Iran's railway net...

Analysis and Comparision of Different High-resolution Data Sets for Urban Applications

The use of remote sensing for urban applications requires high resolution data with respect to geometry and spectral information in order to deal with the complexity and the variability of urban scenes. Unfortunately, the available sensors provide data of either high geometrical or high spectral information. Optical satellite sensors improved a lot with respect to the available ground sampling ...
